Permanent Residency

Who it’s for

The foreign investor who invests capital in Panama and wants immediate permanent residency. The retiree or pensioner with lifetime income who wants to retire with quality of life and tax benefits. The foreigner married to a Panamanian. The foreign professional with a recognized degree and 2 years of prior temporary residency. The foreigner with 10 continuous years of legal residency in Panama. The dependent family member of a permanent resident or Panamanian citizen.

Main categories

  • Qualified Investor — minimum investment of $300,000 in real estate, a fixed-term bank deposit or the stock market. Immediate permanent residency in roughly 30 business days. As of October 2026 the minimum real-estate amount rises to $500,000.
  • Retiree & Pensioner — minimum lifetime pension of $1,000/month. Direct permanent residency with exclusive discounts on health, transport, entertainment and general services.
  • Spouse of a Panamanian — residency through a proven marriage bond with a Panamanian citizen. Requires proof of cohabitation.
  • Foreign Professional — university degree recognized in Panama plus 2 prior years of temporary residency. For professions not reserved to nationals.
  • By Time of Residency — 10 continuous years of legal residency under any migratory category.
  • Family Reunification — dependents of permanent residents or Panamanian citizens.

Important details

Permanent residency grants a Panamanian ID card (cédula). It allows entry to and exit from the country without migratory restrictions. It enables you to apply for an indefinite work permit. It opens access to naturalization and Panamanian citizenship after 5 years. It requires no minimum annual stay to keep the status. The territorial tax regime applies: only income generated inside Panama is taxed.
