Naturalization

Become a Panamanian citizen — several routes to Panamanian nationality by naturalization, depending on your migratory and personal situation.

Main routes

  • 5 years of residency — the standard path. Minimum 5 consecutive years in Panama, legal age, willingness to naturalize, knowledge of Spanish, and passing an exam on Panamanian geography and history.
  • 3 years with family — if you have Panamanian children or are the spouse of a Panamanian citizen, the period is reduced to 3 consecutive years of residency.
  • Friendly Nations visa — citizens of agreement countries can naturalize under conditions similar to those required reciprocally.

Benefits of Panamanian citizenship

A Panamanian passport with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to more than 140 countries. The right to practice professions reserved to nationals. Full political participation: the right to vote and access to public office. A permanent Panamanian ID card. Panamanian retiree benefits in health, transport and services. Easier banking and government procedures. Children born after naturalization automatically obtain Panamanian citizenship.

Requirements

Valid permanent resident card. Permanent residency resolution. Type-E migratory status certification. Proof of economic solvency. Income tax declaration before the DGI. Health certificate. Passport authenticated by the consul or embassy of the country of origin. Police record from Panama and the country of origin. Sworn declaration. Additional documents depending on the case: marriage certificate, children’s birth certificates, etc.

The process

  1. Profile evaluation and verification of compliance with the time and migratory-status requirements.
  2. Complete preparation and apostille of the file. The most frequent cause of rejection is foreign documentation without an apostille or MINREX certification.
  3. Formal filing before the National Immigration Service.
  4. Migratory analysis, ministerial review, and scheduling of the exam before the Electoral Tribunal.
  5. Approval, issuance of the naturalization letter, and obtaining the definitive Panamanian ID card.
  6. Application for the Panamanian passport.
